First National's annual
National Convention, 2008
Conference Ice Breaker & Team Building Activity
on The Gold Coast
Participants: 413
Duration: 60 minutes
Background: First National's
annual National Convention brings together members
from Australia and New Zealand. This year the
conference was held at the Hyatt Regency, Sanctuary
Cove.
Challenge: Do something different
to open the conference.
Outcome: The 413 attending members
got together in state teams scattered around the
magnificent terraces leading down to the beach.
Each member had a drum or percussion instrument
to play to set up an individual team rhythm. The
teams then came together in a huge group to parade
around the pool and in through reception to the
Woolshed conference room. As the teams merged,
Drum Beats had the delegates working together
as a whole band. Once inside the conference room
the newly created orchestra displayed their musical
teamwork to inspire the dynamic African dancer
for a scintillating finale. "Having members
here from all states, the Convention is a great
opportunity for us to get everyone working together
as one, Drum Beats was an inspired idea"
said Ray Ellis, CEO First National.
Nice Touch: The MC, John Blackman
appeared as the little drummer boy with a very
large marching band drum at the end of the Drum
Beats session to continue the theme in his comical
way.

GKR Karate Annual Conference,
2008
Team Building Activity in Sydney
Participants: 130
Duration: 120 minutes
Background: The GKR National Conferences has
been conducted around Australia for the past 12 years and is
attended by instructors from Australia & the South Pacific.
This year the conference was held at the Swiss Grande Hotel,
Bondi Beach, Sydney.
Challenge: 1. As this was to
be the 1st time a theme from outside had been
brought in, naturally some in senior management
expressed concerns about giving up valuable training/seminar
time in order to make way for something seemingly
off-beat like a drum event (pardon the pun).
2. To conclude a jam packed conference with an activity that
was relevant, team building and fun.
Outcome:Within minutes the delegates
had united in a powerful martial percussion. The
energy created by the very motivated participants
lead the Drum Beats facilitators to spontaneously
create new activities within the session. A highlight
being the non contact sparring performed by 2
of the delegates where each move was acutely followed
on the drums by the 140 drummers! The session
was extremely well received as explained by Gavin
Samin the International Vice President of GKR
"Your energy, excitement and command
of the audience had everyone completely enthralled
the entire time. We have had overwhelmingly positive
feedback from our delegates since the weekend
with many long-term management personnel claiming
this as our best conference to date".
Nice Touch: At the end of the
conference each delegate was presented with a
GKR branded mini drum as a take home gift.
